India's leading domestic budget carrier IndiGo is to start operations toMaldives from August 2011.

IndiGo controls 16.8 percent of India's domestic market share and presently hasa fleet of 32 aircraft which is expected to be increased by 50 percent to reacha total of 48 during the course of 2011.
IndiGo President Aditya Ghoshsaid that the new flights were designed to cater to business and leisuretravellers who are constantly on the lookout for new and affordable flyingoptions.


President Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday attended the 20th anniversary celebration ofinternational hotel management company PlanHotel in the Maldives and also thegrand opening of the water villas added to the company's Diamond Athuruga Beachand Water Villas.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that the government and the peopleof the Maldives recognized investors in tourism industry as developmentpartners, and their contribution to the development of this country was assignificant as the contribution of other multilateralorganizations.
Highlighting the government's efforts to combat climatechange, the President said the Maldives tourism industry's promotionalactivities should reflect the country's environment and the government'senvironment policy.
Diamond Athuruga Beach and Water Villas is PlanHotel's second property in the Maldives. The resort consists of 46 beachvillas and 5 garden villas, in addition to the newly added 25 water villas.


The high-end Maldives has been included in a "top 10" list of 'Hot Destinationsfor 2011' by Thomson and First Choice. Thomson Holidays is a UK-based traveloperator and part of TUI Travel PLC while First Choice is the trading name ofTUI UK Limited, part of the TUI Travel PLC Group of companies - the UK's leadingleisure travel company.

In the 'top ten' list, Maldives was placed 7th, followed by Majorca, Turkey andRhodes and preceded by Tenerife, Mexico, Cuba, Porto Santo, Djerba in Tunisia,and Egypt coming first.

Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB) has said that it will announce a newtourism slogan for the Maldives within the next few weeks.

Maldives' Tourism Minister Dr. Mariyam Zulfa said that so far no final decisionhas been made with regard to the exact wording of the slogan but that it will befinalized in consultation with stakeholders of Maldives' tourismindustry.
“The Minister has made it explicitly clear that the new sloganwill be designed so that it appeals to a wide range of potential tourists;including those with high incomes as well as tourists seeking a more affordableholiday in the Maldives,” the MTPB said.
Maldives currently uses theslogan "The Sunny Side of Life" to reflect the appeal of "sun, sea and sand" ofthe Indian Ocean luxury destination.


Maldives has launched a series of seminars to discuss and debate on a newEnvironment Act.

The draft law was compiled because the old law did not cater to solvecontemporary environmental and climate issues faced by the Maldives, accordingto Mohamed Zahir, the Director General of the Environment Ministry.
Thenew legislation has been drafted with the help of experts and technicalassistance from the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).


Mihin Lanka, Sri Lanka's low-cost airline, has started flying to the Maldives from Saturday.

The airline has also started direct flights to Jakarta, Indonesia, and Dhaka, becoming the first and only airline to operate direct flights to these cities.
The new routes will be serviced three times a week by the new Airbus A-321 aircraft acquired last Wednesday from Ireland. CEO of Mihin Lanka, Kapila Chandrasena said: "This is a new aircraft manufactured in 2007 and it would be operated on a dry lease."
Earlier in June, the Sri Lankan Treasury stated that Mihin Lanka will be integrated to SriLankan as its 'budget carrier.' Mihin Lanka operates budget flights to many cities in neighbouring India and cities dotting the Arabian Sea.



Maldives on Wednesday welcomed the 750,000th tourist to the Indian Ocean luxurydestination. This is the first time that the Maldives recorded such a largenumber of tourist arrivals since the archipelago was opened to tourism in1972.

British citizen Mrs. Daniella Ruth Selig became the 750,000th visitor and shearrived at Male' International Airport with her husband and two children. Awelcome ceremony at the airport saw them accompanied by locals dancing totraditional "boduberu" beats. And Maldives Tourism Promotion Board (MTPB)offered Mrs. Selig a complimentary holiday package.
Mrs. Selig isspending her holiday at Anantara Resort and Spa Dhigufinolhu with her family andthis is her second visit to the Maldives, the first being on her honeymoon fouryears back.
