Windsurfing Association of Maldives is to organize a windsurfing championship next year among resort islands.

Windsurfing, which is a popular sport among both tourists and resort staff, is expected to be given a boost due to this contest.


The Association’s chairperson Mohamed Saeed said that discussions will be held in September with the Tourism Ministry on how to go about organizing this championship.


Any resort can host this championship, Saeed said. He said resorts will be invited to forward proposals, and that the resort with the best proposal will be given the opportunity to host the event.

Indian film industry’s top stars are expected to arrive early Monday morning in Maldives.

A Bollywood film crew of 100 is expected to shoot songs for a new film which is expected to give a boost to the tourism industry of Maldives, organizer Starz and Showz Pvt Ltd said.


The company’s agent, actress Dolly Bindra said that the crew will spend around 10 days in three resort islands run by the Sunland group. Local agent Hassan Hisham said that Sunland’s proprietors are taking care of everything that concerns the whole crew and that this was a great service on their part for promotional efforts of Maldives as a tourist destination. Bindra, who is presently in Male’, said that a special entertainment show will be hosted by the Bollywood stars at the Majeediyya Diamond Jubilee Carnival in Male’ on the night of August 27.


Among the top Bollywood stars to arrive in Maldives on Monday include Salman Khan (pic), Sohail Khan, Arbaz Khan, Amrita Arora, VJ Malaika Arora and supermodel Katrina Kaif.


They will be accompanied by the film’s director David Dawan and choreographer Farah Khan, who was the director of the Shahrukh Khan hit film “Main Hoon Na” (I Am There).

An 8-member committee last week started evaluating the bids submitted for Vilivaru and Biyaadhoo resort islands.

The committee was established by the government on 3 August and work commenced the next day, according to the committee chairman Abdul Hameed Zakariyya.


Zakariyya said that the first phase of evaluation will be to check whether all the documents were properly submitted along with the bids.


Evaluation of product concepts, human resource plans, BOQ and such will then be undertaken, Zakariyya said.


The bid evaluation work is carried out at Dharubaaruge, the international conference center in Male’.


Vilivaru and Biyaadhoo resorts were put up for tender after their present period of lease expired.

A permanent advertising program will be needed to sustain the momentum of Maldives’ tourism, Tourism Minister Hassan Sobir said.

As such, Maldives Tourism Promotion Board has targeted some of the world’s premier television channels to promote Maldives as one of the world’s best travel destinations.


From this month onwards, MTPB will be advertising Maldives on Cable News Network (CNN). Advertising programs have already been started on BBC.


As part of promotional efforts, the government has already started advertising and marketing the new 11 islands which are to be set up as tourist resorts, Sobir said.
